Etihad Airways Embraces AI to Revolutionize Safety Management

Technology, especially the advent of AI, is continually reshaping our work and industries. As this new technology emerges, industries and companies, including airlines, are learning to adapt to make their operations more efficient and faster. Airlines, in particular, are exploring ways to leverage AI to enhance safety, improve Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and streamline their operations. One example is Etihad, which is now one of the first to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) to elevate its safety management systems.

Etihad’s journey towards AI-enhanced safety is powered by a partnership with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). This collaboration aims to establish joint training programs, delve into research, and develop AI solutions to support and advance Etihad’s world-class safety processes. The AI-powered platform at the heart of this initiative collects and analyzes vast amounts of data, including flight reports, maintenance, and training activities. By leveraging advanced machine learning technologies like Google BERT, Microsoft Azure, and TF-IDF, the platform significantly enhances Etihad’s analytical capabilities in safety management.

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad Airways’ Chief Operating Officer, shared his insights on this technological leap. “Safety is our top priority at Etihad Airways,” he said. “The integration of Artificial Intelligence is a significant leap forward in enhancing our safety performance and is set to be a game-changer in aviation.” This adoption of AI to support and enhance industry-leading processes highlights Etihad’s dedication to using cutting-edge technology for the safety and wellbeing of its guests and crew.

Mohamed Hasan Al Mansoori, Vice President of Emiratization Strategy & Government Relation at Etihad Airways, emphasized the airline’s innovative approach. “We always explore innovative approaches and partner with leading educational institutions to empower the next generations with tangible experiences within the aviation industry,” he said. This AI-powered system symbolizes the success of Etihad’s collaboration with MBZUAI and its strategy to support Abu Dhabi’s vision.

Through the implementation of AI, Etihad is not just enhancing safety; it’s refining its day-to-day operations. The airline’s Safety Management System (SMS) is evolving, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining high standards and investing in technologies that continuously improve guest safety and wellbeing.

Since signing the agreement with MBZUAI in July 2023, Etihad has trained five interns across various business divisions, including Flight Operations, Revenue Enablement, and Human Resources. Additionally, the airline welcomed eight Emirati graduates through its Bedayati internship program, further fostering talent development in the airline industry.
