There’s a range of opinions about the career of an airline cabin crew. While some view it as a ‘dead end’ job, I firmly disagree. Becoming a cabin crew member, particularly in the Philippines, is often more challenging than securing a corporate job. On the other hand, the perception of being a cabin crew not a long term career really depends on one’s perspective, attitude, and character.
In 2023 alone, I attended four flight purser pinning ceremonies at Philippine Airlines (PAL). These new pursers have been with PAL for over 30 years, with each batch consisting of 15 to 20 crew members, sometimes even more. Considering the four ceremonies I attended, that’s 60 to 80 individuals who have dedicated over three decades to PAL and have now become flight pursers.
The average tenure of PAL cabin crew ranges from 10 to 20 years. Many see their roles as long term careers, while some do transition within the airline, such as becoming pilots.
Service for Others
Aside from passenger care, these professionals embrace their leadership roles within the cabin. As the highest-ranking officials on board, they don’t just lead; they inspire their teams. Their approach to their work is more than just fulfilling job responsibilities; it’s about embodying a lifestyle that blends service, leadership, and adventure.
For these flight pursers, being part of the cabin crew transcends the conventional understanding of a career. It’s a way of life that encompasses passion for service, a love for travel, and the joy of inspiring others.
PAL’s approach to employee care contributes to this sentiment. The airline strives to provide a balanced work-life environment, alongside above-industry-standard compensation. This supportive atmosphere is key to why many of their crew members have stayed for over 20 years. It’s not just about the financial rewards but also about the positive work environment.
There is No Perfect Airline and Career
Every airline and job has its pros and cons, including varying working hours, schedules, and the potential for emergencies. However, the experience of being a cabin crew member can significantly shape one’s character, fostering helpfulness, prioritizing others, and developing selflessness. These traits are invaluable and often cherished long after one’s aviation career.
Is a career as a cabin crew member sustainable in the long term? Absolutely. This path offers more than just a hierarchical climb from probationary cabin crew to flight purser; it presents a journey of substantial personal and professional evolution. The role brings with it both challenges and deeply fulfilling experiences.
However, the trajectory of this career ultimately hinges on individual choices and perspectives. It depends on your future plans, where your true passions lie, and most importantly, your mindset and attitude. Embracing this career means committing to a lifestyle that continually evolves and adapts, shaped by experiences both in the skies and on the ground. For those who find their calling in this field, the role of a cabin crew member can be a rewarding, lifelong journey, replete with growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.
