Jin Air, the low-cost carrier based in Jeju, has enhanced its fleet of Boeing 737-800 and 900 aircraft by installing mirrors in the overhead baggage bins. This improvement, completed across its 22 aircraft, is designed to speed up the boarding process and minimize cabin maintenance costs. By allowing passengers to easily see into the overhead bins from the aisle, Jin Air aims to facilitate smoother boarding and reduce the time aircraft spend at gates.
The decision to install mirrors came after Jin Air identified a recurring issue with increased maintenance costs associated with seat damage. Passengers frequently stood on the seat cushions to check for overhead bin space, leading to wear and tear. Besides adding costs, this behavior posed a risk to passenger safety and the well-being of those seated nearby. With the new mirrors, passengers can now quickly glance up to see available storage space, thereby eliminating the need to climb on seats.
Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
The mirrors, installed on the underside of the bin doors, not only help in managing passenger luggage but also improve safety. They enable cabin crew to more easily spot suspicious objects in the bins, enhancing security measures. This feature has already been appreciated in other airlines that employ Komy mirrors, which have noted similar benefits in operational efficiency and safety.
In November 2023, Jin Air began the process of integrating these mirrors into their aircraft, completing the installation by February 2024. This upgrade is part of Jin Air’s broader effort to enhance passenger experience and operational readiness.
Jin Air operates a diverse fleet of 28 aircraft, which includes not only the Boeing 737-800 and 900 models but also two 737 MAX 8s and four wide-bodied 777-200ERs. The latter are configured for high-density seating and are next in line to receive the mirror upgrades, following the successful implementation in the 737NG series.
