Koala Airlines traces its roots to Desert Air Safaris, a company that operated air tours and charter flights across Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands for over 50 years. Founded in 1970 by Dick Lang, Desert Air Safaris played a key role in connecting remote destinations in Australia. In 2019, Koala Airlines acquired Desert Air Safaris’ Air Operators Certificate (AOC), allowing the new airline to build on this legacy. Koala Airlines will rebrand and introduce new initiatives while continuing to serve remote areas, honoring the heritage of Desert Air Safaris.
Experienced Leadership at the Helm
Leading Koala Airlines is CEO Bill Astling, who brings 45 years of experience in airline restructuring, operations, and strategy across the Asia Pacific region. Astling’s extensive background in consulting for various airlines positions Koala Airlines to compete against regional powerhouses like Qantas and Virgin Australia.
Koala Airlines will enter a competitive market, facing off against well-established low-cost carriers. Jetstar, owned by Qantas, is a popular choice for budget travel in Australia. It offers affordable flights to about 20 domestic destinations, as well as international routes to New Zealand, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Key Australian cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth are among Jetstar’s main hubs.
Another major competitor is Regional Express (Rex), which connects rural Australia to major cities. Rex operates flights to 60 small regional airports from larger cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, catering to travelers heading to remote locations such as Wagga Wagga, Mount Isa, and Port Augusta.
