Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced a delay in the delivery of its first A330neo aircraft. Originally scheduled to arrive in September 2024, Airbus has identified issues during the flight line stage, pushing the expected delivery to late November 2024. This setback affects the airline’s plans for its new fleet.
Malaysia Airlines expects to receive the first A330neo by late November 2024 and additional deliveries by early 2025. The company continues to prioritize customer service and network optimization, ensuring that passengers experience minimal disruption during this period.
The delay in the delivery of the A330neo impacts the airline’s scheduled inaugural flight to Melbourne, which was originally set for November 25, 2024. Malaysia Airlines will continue using its A330-300 aircraft for this route until the A330neo enters service. The airline has confirmed that there will be no changes to the flight schedule, so passengers can expect the same level of service despite the delay.
MAG has reassured passengers that the transition to the A330neo will proceed as soon as possible. The company is actively working with Airbus and lessor Avolon to secure a new delivery timeline and ensure the A330neo enters service promptly. The airline expects to have five A330neo aircraft by the first quarter of 2025.
Boeing 737 MAX 8 Deliveries Also Affected
In addition to the A330neo delays, MAG is also facing challenges with the delivery of its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The company is in constant communication with Boeing and its lessor, AirLease Corp, to closely monitor the situation and adjust plans accordingly. MAG’s fleet modernization efforts have faced obstacles due to these delays, but the company remains committed to updating its fleet as part of its growth strategy.
Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG, addressed the situation, stating, “We are deeply disappointed by the aircraft delivery delays by Airbus, compounded by the ongoing setbacks of our 737 MAX 8 deliveries. These delays are significantly disrupting our fleet modernisation plans and growth requirements. As we take decisive steps toward a stronger 2025, having the necessary assets in place is important to meet our growth targets, optimise our network, and continue delivering enhanced services to our customers.”
Despite the delays, MAG remains dedicated to its fleet modernization goals. The company is working closely with its aircraft manufacturers and lessors to minimize the disruptions caused by these delays. MAG has emphasized its commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining high standards while dealing with these challenges.
