Philippine Airlines’ (PAL) resurgence from the pandemic has been remarkable, especially after recording an all-time high performance in 2023. The airline plans to reinvest all its earnings into upgrading its fleet and enhancing customer experience. PAL also anticipates stronger demand in the coming years, making it highly likely that the airline may exercise its options for three additional Airbus A350-1000s.
In June 2023, PAL finalized its order for nine A350-1000s, with options for three more. At yesterday’s media conference, PAL expressed optimism about its growth and demand, indicating that it is most likely to convert its three A350-1000 options into firm orders. This action would increase PAL’s total Airbus A350-1000 fleet to 12.
PAL President and COO, Capt. Stanley Ng, stated, “We are a little more optimistic right now, and most likely, we will have to make a decision by the end of the year. Looking at today’s market condition, it seems there is an opportunity to acquire an additional three aircraft (A350-1000).” Besides the nine firm orders for the A350-1000, PAL is also expecting the delivery of thirteen A321-271NX (neo) aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026.
Additionally, PAL recently accepted delivery of a leased Boeing 777-3U3ER (777-300ER) from Garuda, formerly registered as PK-GID. PAL is also poised to take delivery of another Boeing 777. RP-C7783 is set to replace RP-C7776, which will be returned to its lessor. The latter was the second 777 to join the PAL fleet, delivered in 2010.
Will PAL Order More Widebody Aircraft?
Given the shift towards operating more efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, PAL is actively exploring additional orders for its future fleet, with a particular focus on widebody aircraft. Although the airline is satisfied with its current Airbus A330-300 fleet, it recognizes the superior fuel efficiency, quietness, and environmental friendliness of newer aircraft models, such as the Boeing 787. PAL is in the process of evaluating various aircraft types to replace older planes and expects to make a decision within the next year or two.
The airline’s Airbus A330-300s have been reliable for regional, Middle East, and Australian routes. Despite their relative youth, PAL acknowledges the increased efficiency and sustainability of operating newer models, such as the A330-900neo and the Boeing 787. However, challenges related to the supply chain and aircraft availability persist.
While PAL has not specified any particular aircraft, there are rumors suggesting the airline is considering additional A350-900s, A330-900neos, and Boeing 787s as potential additions and replacements for the A330-300 fleet. The Boeing 787-9/10, in particular, could offer PAL greater flexibility in serving markets that may not be suitable for the A350-1000 or A350-900. This decision remains to be confirmed, as PAL’s immediate focus is on upgrading the cabins of its current fleet to ensure a more consistent product experience. Nevertheless, we can anticipate an announcement regarding a widebody aircraft order from PAL in due course.
