Questions people ask when they learn you’re a flight attendant

Let us accept the fact that many still don’t have much knowledge about the job and life of a flight attendant. The majority mistakenly believe it only concerns chicken, beef, or safety demonstrations. Some even think it’s glamorous because of the free travel, so to speak. Here are some typical questions that people make after learning that you work as a flight attendant. Of course, it’s best to inform them of the duties and restrictions of a cabin crew member’s position.

On the other hand, some people will request plane fare discounts or to bring a “pasalubong” for a friend who lives abroad. These, however, are neither simple nor readily available.

Anyway, I would just like to rundown a few common questions that people ask when they learn you’re a flight attendant.

1. “How much is the fare from Manila to Davao (and other places)?”

Actually, flight attendants are unaware of the cost of air travel. They fly for free, so I can’t blame them (sometimes). The cost of flying can vary.

2. “Can you discount my ticket”?

No, should they choose to purchase one, flight attendants are also subject to the current airline promo fares. Although some offer discounts, such as “ID90,” which is typically only available to family members.

3. “What are your promo fares?”

They could be aware of their airline promotions or not. It is definitely better to go directly to the airline’s website because, in general, what flight attendants tell you is also what you will see there.

4. “May I send something over to my relative please? It is only light. She  is located not so far”

To be honest, one balikbayan box isn’t particularly lightweight. Additionally, we are unsure of the distance between the recipient’s home and their hotel for the layover.

5. “Is it easy to become a flight attendant?”

Anything involving human lives is never simple. And ahhhmmmm, on average across all airlines, only about 50 to 70 applicants out of 1,000 are accepted. That is not at all simple.

6. “Why that? Don’t you want to get into something where there is more growth and you use your brains a little more?”

I can say with absolute certainty that anyone who asks that question has never worked as cabin crew or even attended training. Some people might need to brush up on their knowledge of the position and the facts in order to learn a little bit more, I suppose.

7. “How much is your salary?”

Many people will still ask you how much your salary is once they learn that you work as cabin crew, especially if you fly for an international airline, so I guess this question applies to all jobs.

8. “Where is my pasalubong?”

It is a Filipino thing.

9. “Where’s your flight tomorrow? Singapore? Great! Do you still have space in your bag?”

People believe that it is simple to send something to someone else in another country just like that, particularly if the cabin crew is not actually from that nation and/or has only a brief layover. It’s not that easy.

10. “Can you get us free flights?”

Most of the time, only their immediate family members are eligible for their free flights, and they are frequently subject to being bumped off.
