Some FAQs on becoming a flight attendant

Some FAQs on becoming a flight attendant

Flight attendant qualifications and requirements vary by airline, making it difficult to answer general questions about height, weight, tattoos, education, and experience. That being said, here are some FAQs (frequently asked questions) about becoming a flight attendant. Please keep in mind that these do not represent the qualifications or requirements of any specific airline; therefore, you should still contact them.

Please do not mistake these for a specific airline. These are only for your general information.

Are tattoos allowed?

Yes, for almost all of our local Philippine airlines, as long as they are not visible when you put on your cabin crew uniform. However, some international airlines do not allow them at all, even if they are hidden beneath the uniform. Qatar Airways is one such example. Some airlines will also allow visible tattoos. Virgin Atlantic is one example. So it really depends on which airline you apply to.

Are braces allowed?

It is generally not permitted, but a few airlines permit it under certain conditions. For example, because face masks are currently required on board, some airlines permit cabin crew to use braces as long as face masks are not removed in front of passengers. However, if the airline decides to drop the facemask rule based on country covid-19 policies, braces will no longer be permitted.

Do I have to be a tourism course degree holder?

Any course will suffice. There are many cabin crew members who are registered nurses, management graduates, economics degree holders, and have completed other college courses.

Do I have to go first to a flight attendant school before I apply in the airline?

Going to an FA school has its benefits, but it all comes down to how well you perform during recruitment and training. I know some first-timers (people who had never even seen an airplane) who graduated as class valedictorian from the airline’s cabin crew training program. Basically, whether you came from an FA training school or not, you will still have to go through the airline’s cabin crew training program. The airline does not require enrollment in an FA school.

Is it true that the height requirement is 5’3″ for females and 5’5″ for male?

It differs depending on the airline. Some have height requirements, while others prioritize arm reach over height. So, if you are 5’0″ and your arm reach is within the right lengths, you may be able to get in.

Do I have to be a college graduate?

It differs depending on the airline. Some are acceptable if you have completed at least two years of college, while others require that you complete college. However, I encourage everyone to complete the entirety of their education as they can.

I am married and I have kids. Am I still qualified?

It also differs by airline. Some airlines prefer single, but others accept married couples with children.

I saw that the age limit of a certain airline is 28 years old. I am 29 but I have flown for a different airline for 5 years. Would I still be considered?

First and foremost, regardless of your age, there is no harm in trying. Who knows, maybe your 5 years of experience working for another airline will outweigh your 1 year over the age limit. Simply go out and try. You have nothing to fear. You gain knowledge and experience.

Do I need to learn how to swim before I apply?

It is advantageous if you already know how to swim, but if you do not, you will be taught during your training. However, ditching is part of the cabin crew training and must be passed regardless.

Is training very hard?

What is the difference between assessment day and open day?

When you say “open day,” it means that anyone can walk in and apply, whereas “assessment day” is usually a “by-invite” recruitment event where those on the shortlist are called up for assessment.

What happens if my resume and application form are incomplete?

The airline may consider it “misrepresentation.” Remember to sign the application form to attest that all of the information you have provided is accurate, complete, and true. If you are caught misrepresenting yourself, you may be fired.

This is why I advise everyone to include all relevant information in their resumes and application forms. Many people with AWOL records believe that not declaring a company will suffice. Completely incorrect. If the airline accesses your social security (SSS) and other government records (PAGIBIG, PhilHealth), all of your previous employers will be revealed. Misrepresentation is equivalent to lying under oath, particularly after you’ve signed and confirmed that all information provided is accurate and true.

How long is training period?

Usually 2 to 3 months for most airlines. Depends per airline and their training program.

Do I have to maintain a certain waistline or weight?

Yes, your weight must be proportionate to your height. Some even consider BMI (body mass index).

I hope this was helpful! Once again, this is not a specific airline. It is always best to inquire and learn.

If you have any questions about the airline, you can always contact them.
