Southwest Airlines has broken new ground by becoming the first major U.S. airline to reach a tentative agreement with its flight attendants union, Transport Workers Union Local 556. This agreement comes as a significant move, especially since the union’s nearly 19,000 members haven’t seen a pay raise in four years.
The flight attendants at Southwest have been vocal about their needs for some time now. They’ve been pushing for higher pay and a more balanced work-life situation in their new contracts. That union represents around 17,120 transport workers involved in ramp operations, provisioning, and cargo handling. On the other hand, other major airlines like United and American Airlines haven’t yet managed to finalize agreements with their flight attendants for new contracts.
The push for better contracts isn’t unique to Southwest or even to the airline sector. Over the past couple of years, unions in various industries like aerospace, construction, and rail have been fighting tooth and nail for better wages and more benefits. This is happening in a labor market that’s pretty tight, making the negotiations all the more critical.
