We celebrate International Flight Attendant Day every May 31. However, this year is made more special compared to the past two years as more flight attendants are regaining their wings again! Of course, this is a reason to celebrate!
The last two years were hard. Flight attendants were facing so much uncertainty and some had to temporarily let go of their wings. However, this 2022 sings a different tune! More airlines are ramping up operations. Some are even hiring more flight attendants again!
Why do we celebrate International Flight Attendant Day?
May 31, today, is known as International Flight Attendant Day or World Cabin Crew Awareness Day. This is a special day where we recognize the efforts and dedication of these flight attendants who continue to work hard to ensure the safety of passengers. So in case you are flying today, please do greet your flight attendant with a “Happy International Flight Attendant Day.”
The history of International Flight Attendant Day
There is still no solid written history as to how World Flight Attendant day started but it is said that the patron saint of flight attendants, Bona of Pisa, celebrates her feast day on May 29. Bona of Pisa was a third member of the third order of Augustinian nuns and she was the one who helped lead travelers on pilgrimages. So maybe there is a connection between the May 31 date to the feast day of the patron saint of cabin crew members.
So what else do we do on this date?
We remember and recognize all the efforts and dedication of our cabin crew that had ensured the safety and security of travelers in getting from point A to point B. Despite them not being able to join their own families during special holidays or occasions, they make it a point that their passengers don’t miss these occasions. More so, we remember those flight attendants who have sacrificed their lives or placed their very own in great danger during emergencies.
Once a flight attendant, always a flight attendant
To be a flight attendant is more than just a career and a calling. It is a lifestyle. You learn a lot in life being a cabin crew, and this, later on, becomes part of your character. The lessons and experience of being a flight attendant make one stronger, braver, more resilient, more giving, and more selfless. Flight attendants also have a way of just simply connecting. In airports, they greet each other regardless of which airline. They can also spend lots of hours talking with each other. These flight attendants live a life that not anyone can just simply understand. Hence, this is why once you are a flight attendant, you are forever one, regardless of where you end up in life.
Today, let us also not forget to celebrate with our future generation flight attendants, our aspirants. They will be the ones who will take over the skies, to make sure that air travel remains to be the safest mode of travel.
To all our flight attendants, present and former, today is yours! I celebrate this day with you! Cheers to more flights and more memories made! Looking forward to flying with you soon!
Happy International Flight Attendant Day everyone!
