If you’ve ever seen a plane landing, particularly if you’re a plane spotter, you might have noticed that the main landing gears are often tilted as they approach the runway. This was something I also took notice of whenever I would see them land while driving near airport areas and close to runways.

The landing gear is intricately designed to absorb the impact and forces experienced during landing. The tilting mechanism allows the aircraft’s structure to flex and effectively absorb these vertical forces. This not only cushions the landing but also reduces the stress on the aircraft’s structure and its passengers.

Another reason for the angled landing gear is to lower the aircraft’s center of gravity. This design ensures that the aircraft remains stable on the runway during takeoff and landing. The wheels of the landing gear are not parallel to the fuselage but are set at an angle, contributing to this stability.

The Landing Gear Deployment Process

The deployment of the landing gear is a carefully timed process. Pilots typically lower the landing gear between 1,000 to 2,000 feet, approximately 2-3 minutes before touchdown. This timing is important for a stabilized approach, ensuring a smooth and controlled descent onto the runway.

Deploying the landing gear early in the landing phase also serves to reduce noise. By engaging the landing gear system promptly, the aircraft effectively mitigates noise disturbance, creating a more pleasant atmosphere for passengers during the critical phase of landing.

In the event of an emergency or a failure in the main power system, airplanes are equipped with an emergency extension system. This system ensures that the landing gear is automatically lowered, either through airflow assistance and redundant hydraulic systems in larger aircraft or manual extension systems in smaller planes.
