Philippine Airlines (PAL) has long reigned as the sole operator offering a direct route from Manila to San Francisco. Yet, the tides are turning as October brings the much-anticipated launch of United Airlines‘ flights on the same route. This emergence of competition in the airline industry often signals more favorable fares for travelers, and this new development is no exception.
United Airlines, the lone American airline providing a direct connection from the mainland United States to Manila, has chosen San Francisco as its primary gateway to Asia. This decision shouldn’t raise eyebrows, given the city’s prominence in United’s Asian network. The airline has chosen the Boeing 777-300ER to serve the daily flights on this new route, which will simplify the journey for those aiming to travel to Manila from the mainland United States. Passengers flying with United won’t need to reroute via Guam or Palau anymore.
United’s Asian Expansion
This launch isn’t the only move United is making to expand its Asian footprint. As part of its Asia expansion strategy, United will also commence a new route from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. United currently operates a Hong Kong service from San Francisco and this new addition will extend its reach to a second California hub at Los Angeles International Airport. From October 28, the Boeing 787-9 will embark on daily journeys, increasing United’s offerings to three daily flights to Hong Kong in the upcoming winter.
Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, is another Asian destination where United has exclusivity among American carriers. This October, United Airlines plans to double its flights to Taipei. Starting October 29, travelers can catch two daily flights from San Francisco to Taipei, with the Boeing 777-200ERs catering to the additional flight.
The Pressure is On
With U.S. airlines gradually introducing direct, non-stop connections from the U.S. mainland to Manila, Philippine Airlines may need to reassess their strategies and of course further improve their services including pricing. Competition is good because it’s the flying public who benefits.
