United Airlines Unveils a Major Expansion Plan in Houston

United Airlines has big plans for Houston, announcing a $2.6 billion renovation and expansion of Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This ambitious project is more than just an upgrade; it’s a complete transformation, including a state-of-the-art baggage system, a brand-new United Club location, and an Early Bag Storage facility (EBS). Adding to the excitement, United is introducing a direct flight to Georgetown, Guyana*, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s growth strategy.

The expansion under United Airlines’ United Next growth plan is about enhancing not only the physical aspects of travel but also the overall travel experience and stimulating economic growth. This initiative includes the expansion of 40 gates at IAH, which will allow for larger aircraft and a projected 40% increase in passenger numbers on peak travel days by 2026 compared to 2023.

United is a key player in Houston, not just as the largest airline but also as a significant employer. With a workforce of over 14,000, 400 flights departing daily, and having hired more than 2,100 people in Houston in 2023 alone, the airline plans to add another 1,500 jobs in 2024. Moreover, the expansion is anticipated to generate around 4,000 construction jobs, thereby making a substantial impact on the local economy.

A New Era for Terminal B

United’s Terminal B Transformation Program, pending final approval from Houston’s city council, is a reimagination of the travel experience. Picture a three-level, 765,000 sq. ft. Terminal B North Concourse with 22 mainline, narrow-body gates. In the South Concourse, 30 regional jet gates are being converted to 18 gates for larger, two-class regional jets, and every flight will board via jet bridge. The project also includes major concession hubs, a new baggage handling system, and the largest United Club in the system. Added to this is the expanded curbside and roadway capacity with a ground-level check-in area and a new sensory room for passengers with disabilities.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting its significance for the city’s status as a world-class destination and its economic vitality.

The new United Club in Terminal B is part of United’s overhaul of its lounge spaces, joining eight new locations opened in the last two years. These clubs feature 50% more seating space, higher-quality food and beverage options, and designs reflecting local markets and a modern take on the United Club experience. Last year, United introduced United Club FlySM in Denver, a grab-and-go club concept, which has seen over 100,000 travelers since its launch.

Expanding Routes and Services

United will be the first to offer non-stop service between Houston and Georgetown, Guyana, starting April 1, with four weekly flights on a Boeing 737-MAX 8. This new route complements United’s extensive network from Houston, which includes more than 160 destinations, many of which are not served non-stop by other carriers.

As part of United’s ambitious United Next growth strategy, the airline’s new Airbus A321neo will take its inaugural flight from Houston on November 30. This aircraft is a significant addition to United’s fleet, featuring an advanced cabin interior, including Panasonic’s new NEXT inflight entertainment system, a new domestic first-class seat, larger overhead bins, high-speed Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and LED lighting.
