United Airlines has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to introduce a new daily roundtrip flight between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). If approved, this new route will offer more nonstop travel options and enhance connectivity between Washington D.C. and the Bay Area.
Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, emphasized the benefits of the proposed route. “With our hub in San Francisco, United is well positioned to serve the strong customer demand for air travel between Washington National and the Bay Area,” he said. The new service aims to avoid peak travel times at DCA, offering a morning departure from Washington National and an afternoon departure from San Francisco. This schedule will provide travelers with more convenient options and better connections to domestic and international destinations via SFO.
United plans to operate the route with the Boeing MAX 8 aircraft, which has 150 economy cabin seats and a total of 166 seats. This aircraft choice will ensure a comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers.
Economic Hubs and Business Connectivity
The Washington, D.C. region is a major center of commerce, hosting over 15 Fortune 500 companies and numerous organizations focused on emerging technologies like AI and data sciences. Additionally, it is home to the U.S. Federal Government and global institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
California, on the other hand, is the state with the highest number of Fortune 500 companies and boasts the fifth-largest economy in the world, valued at $3.9 trillion in 2023. San Francisco, the heart of Northern California, is home to over 30 Fortune 500 companies, including major corporations like Airbnb, Apple, Alphabet, Chevron, Gap, Visa, and Wells Fargo. United Airlines already serves more than 60 domestic destinations and over 30 international destinations from San Francisco, making it a crucial hub for both business and leisure travelers.
As an alternative to the DCA-SFO route, United has also applied for its first-ever DCA-Los Angeles (LAX) flight. This proposed flight would provide healthy competition, as three other airlines currently operate this route. The new service would offer the earliest arrival in LAX and the latest morning departure to DCA, providing greater flexibility and schedule choices for customers.
