What Being a Flight Attendant is Not About

I saw a TikTok video of a new flight attendant who seemed shocked by the realities of her job. She had just completed her intense training and had only been flying for a few months. It got me thinking about how important it is for aspiring flight attendants to know what the job is really about. So let me share what being a flight attendant is not about.

It’s Not Just About Free Travel

Sure, flight attendants get to travel, but that’s a perk, not the main job. Airlines pay you to keep passengers safe and comfortable, not to be a globetrotter. You’ll get to explore new places during layovers, but remember, you’re there to serve passengers first. Free travel is a perk or benefit for your hard work.

The Title Isn’t the End Goal

Earning your wings isn’t the finish line; it’s just the starting point. A few new flight attendants think they’ve made it once they get the title and start slacking off. They then get into trouble with their airline later on, especially during their regularization. The job is not about earning the title “cabin crew” or “flight attendant”. The real goal should be to excel at serving and ensuring the safety of your passengers.

Social Media Isn’t the Job

I’ve heard from senior flight attendants that a few newbies are more focused on their social media than their actual duties. They post pictures from different locations and in uniform, but they are lazy when it comes to the real work. Remember, the job isn’t about looking good online; it’s about doing your job well for the airline that hired you. This may also affect your regularization status later on.

It’s Not All Glamour

The job has its tough moments. You’ll deal with shifting schedules, difficult passengers, and even emergencies that put lives at risk. You might have to clean up messes or handle turbulence. It’s not all picture-perfect sunsets and stylish uniforms.

That’s why it’s crucial for anyone thinking about this career to understand what it really involves. Being a flight attendant is about providing excellent service, ensuring passenger safety, and making flights as pleasant as possible. The travel, good pay, and other perks are rewards for doing a job well done. And trust me, airlines appreciate it when they hear you’re in it for the right reasons.
