In a surprising turn of events, UK-based transatlantic carrier Global Airlines has recently made a strange addition to its board of directors. Tom Stokely, co-founder and former owner of the adult content website OnlyFans, has joined the airline’s leadership. This decision has stirred quite a bit of interest in the industry, given Stokely’s background and the nature of his previous ventures.
Stokely’s journey in the business world has been nothing short of remarkable. He founded OnlyFans in 2016, alongside his brother and father. Together, they grew the website into a highly profitable platform, reporting a subscription profit of $45.8 billion in 2019. Following this success, they sold their ownership of the company to billionaire publisher Leo Radvinsky.
Global Airlines’ Ambitious Plans
Global Airlines, set to commence operations in late 2024, plans to use a fleet of four second-hand A380s for flights from London to New York-JFK and Los Angeles. The carrier has already acquired these aircraft and has future plans for more. Each A380 will accommodate approximately 471 passengers, and the airline has shared designs for its first-class cabins, which promise luxury and comfort.
The industry, however, remains skeptical about the airline’s potential success. Competing on the highly contested London to New York-JFK route against established airlines with multiple daily flights poses a significant challenge. The economic viability of operating large, fuel-thirsty aircraft like the A380 under current market conditions is also a concern, especially with rising oil prices and global tensions.
Initially planned for a spring 2024 launch, Global Airlines has pushed back its start to the next 12 months. In the meantime, they plan to operate charter flights using their A380s, a model that even partner Hi Fly found challenging to sustain. A spokesperson for Global Airlines mentioned ongoing delays and supply chain issues that they are working to resolve.
Stokely’s Role in the Future of Global Airlines
With Stokely now a part of Global Airlines, his commercial expertise, albeit from a controversial industry, brings a unique perspective to the board. Whether his insights will help steer the airline towards success is yet to be seen, as the aviation industry is notoriously complex and unforgiving.
Global Airlines’ journey to becoming a key player in the transatlantic flight market is filled with challenges and uncertainties. The appointment of Tom Stokely to the board adds an intriguing element to the airline’s narrative. Only time will tell how this bold move will impact the airline’s future.
