SMBC Aviation Capital has finalized a lease agreement with United Airlines for twenty Airbus A321neo aircraft. These planes, part of United’s fleet expansion plan announced in April, are set to be delivered from 2026 and will be sourced from SMBC Aviation Capital’s direct Airbus orderbook.
This recent agreement adds to a previously completed deal between the two companies, where SMBC leased 20 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft to United through a sale and leaseback transaction.
The lease agreement aligns with United Airlines’ ongoing focus on expanding its fleet with more modern and efficient aircraft. By incorporating the Airbus A321neo into its operations, United aims to improve fuel efficiency and operational capacity, supporting the airline’s goal of offering better service while reducing its environmental impact.
United Airlines Chief Financial Officer, Michael Leskinen, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, stating, “The relationship between SMBC and United has never been stronger, and these leases are part of our efforts to optimize our balance sheet and enhance our return on capital. We thank SMBC for its continued support and partnership.”
