Emirates, one of the most well-known airlines in the world, has made some changes to its planes that everyone is talking about. Aviation enthusiasts on social media have been sharing photos of the new look, wondering if it’s a one-off or a permanent change. Luckily, Emirates has confirmed that the refreshed livery is here to stay and will be applied to all its planes gradually.
So, what’s changed?
One of the most noticeable differences is on the tail section of the A380. While the basic design and concept have remained the same, the UAE flag on the Emirates tailfin has been given a 3D effect, making it look more dynamic and flowing.
On the fuselage, the signature gold “Emirates” lettering in English and Arabic is also bolder and 32.5% larger. The iconic red branding on the aircraft belly, introduced in 2005, has been kept, but the website URL “Emirates.com” has been dropped from the design.
The wingtips have also been painted red with the Emirates logo in Arabic calligraphy “popping” out in reverse white. And, for those with a window seat, they’ll notice the UAE flag colors painted on the wingtips facing the fuselage.
Refreshed Livery After a Decade
Emirates doesn’t make changes to its livery very often, with the original livery unveiled in 1985 and its first refresh taking place 14 years later. Sir Tim Clark, the airline’s President, had this to say about the latest refresh: “We’re refreshing our livery to keep it modern, without losing the key elements of our identity such as the UAE flag on our tailfin and the Arabic calligraphy.”
The first aircraft to get the new look is an Airbus A380 with the registration A6-EOE, which was delivered to Emirates in 2014. While it has previously worn special liveries, such as the Dubai Expo 2020 and the one to celebrate the United Arab Emirates’ 50th anniversary, this new livery is set to become the standard for all Emirates planes.
However, with over 250 planes in its fleet, repainting all of them will be a massive task. To start with, 24 aircraft, including 17 Boeing 777s, are expected to sport the refreshed livery by the end of 2023. From August 2024, all new Emirates aircraft will be delivered in this new livery.
I am sure plane spotters all around the world are already eagerly anticipating spotting the airline’s planes with the new look in the coming months.
