We celebrate International Flight Attendant Day on May 31. It is a worldwide celebration that recognizes the efforts and dedication of all flight attendants. Usually, this is celebrated mostly on social media with flight attendants posting pictures in their uniforms. However here in the Philippines, a group of flight attendants decided to celebrate International Flight Attendant Day through an event to help cabin crew aspirants reach their dreams.
Spearheaded by no less than Amor Maximo, the event was entitled “Flight Attendant Convention 2022”. Its main purpose is to help, prepare, and inspire cabin crew aspirants to turn their flight attendant dream into reality. It is also the very first face-to-face “become a flight attendant” seminar after two years due to the pandemic.
However, Amor was not alone here. With the help of other flight attendants Candace Gold from Emirates, Vanessa Peronilla from Saudia, Princess Guevarra from AirAsia, Cams Cataluna, Markisha Ong, and PAL flight attendants Jheff Ry, Melchiel Gerodias, and Charmaine Fulgencio, the aspirants did indeed have a strong backing of cabin crew ready to help them. More than that, it was everyone’s way of celebrating International Flight Attendant day 2022!
I was also in attendance at the Flight Attendant Convention where I gave the opening remarks for the afternoon session.
The best part? We had 65 cabin crew aspirant attendees! Yes, that much for a very first face-to-face workshop!
The topics covered
The FA Convention was a whole day activity packed with different topics that will help prepare our aspirants to become flight attendant. Topics covered are the job of a cabin crew, basic grooming, service, safety (the most important), and tips to ace the next upcoming recruitment event.
Topics were from tips for flight attendant applications to an overview of safety including doing inflight safety demonstrations, and information about inflight service with an actual airline trolley!
The afternoon program was the convention proper! It was comprised of flight attendants talking about their application experience, sharing about the importance of grooming with actual make-up routines shown, song numbers, and Q&A with cabin crew coaches.
Our aspirants wanted this badly
If there was one thing I noticed from the participants, they were so into the convention. They were there really for one purpose, and that is to become a cabin crew. You can see from their faces that they wanted to learn. They want to become a cabin crew and fly soon. For most of these aspirants, becoming a cabin crew is a childhood dream.
These flight attendant aspirants come from different walks of life and all ages. There is even one aspirant who must be above 40 years old. We thought that she was the mom of an attendee but she was the attendee! Even at her age, this attendee does see hope, and this touched all of us.
The aspirants listened intently and actively participated in the activities. They were all smiles, knowing that hope to make their dream come true is just around the corner.
Giving back to celebrate International Flight Attendant Day
Every flight attendant believes that they are now living a dream. For most, it was a childhood dream turned into a reality, an answered prayer! Each cabin crew member has their way of paying it forward after God answered their prayers.
For these flight attendants, they simply wanted to pay it back by helping these aspirants reach their cabin crew dream. Well, every flight attendant began as an aspirant too!
Amidst their busy schedules, Amor, Candace, Vanny, Cams, Chermaine, Kiel, Jheff, Kish, and Princess did take time out to share their talents and knowledge with these aspirants. Who knows, these aspirants may end up flying with them in the future!
The flight attendants present did give their best in lecturing and mentoring our cabin crew aspirants. They gladly answered each and every question with a smile. They did give words of encouragement to our aspirants who continue to pursue their dreams. These seasoned flight attendants simply want our cabin crew aspirants to celebrate International Flight Attendant Day with them soon!
After the conference, these aspirants did go around to have pictures with their flight attendant idols, with hopes of being in their shoes one day!
While it was also a tiring day for all of us, we all felt so fulfilled knowing that we were able to bring hope to our cabin crew aspirants!
The best International Flight Attendant Day Celebration for me
May 31 is usually spent posting pictures of our uniformed flight attendants and their greetings. I would usually receive more than a hundred pictures to be posted and of course, I gladly make sure that they all get posted!
However, this was different. I did feel a great purpose for this celebration. More than the awareness of flight attendants is the fulfillment of making cabin crew dreams come true!
I am deeply honored to be part of this event even if I am not a cabin crew. I have been an advocate for cabin crew empowerment and the Flight Attendant Convention 2022 was such a different experience.
We did empower our future generation flight attendants! As such, I believe that this is the whole essence of International Flight Attendant Day!
Happy International Flight Attendant Day to all our present and future flight attendants! Fly you all soon!
