Big news for environmentally conscious travelers! The Lufthansa Group is taking a significant step towards sustainable aviation by extending its Green Fares to long-haul flights. Starting November 30, passengers on 12 selected flight routes can experience a more eco-friendly journey. This initiative includes connections from Lufthansa Group hubs like Frankfurt, Brussels, and Zurich to various global destinations, including two routes from North America.
Christina Foerster, a member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board responsible for Brand & Sustainability, shares the vision behind this move, “The growing demand for our Green Fares shows that more and more people want to travel as sustainably as possible. We support them with suitable offers. The Green Fares test on long-haul flights will provide us with important insights for the further development of our portfolio for more sustainable travel.”
This expansion of Green Fares reflects Lufthansa Group’s dedication to offering eco-conscious passengers simple, easy-to-book options that align with their values. As the aviation industry becomes highly competitive post-pandemic, such initiatives are crucial for airlines to stand out.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Flying
Harry Hohmeister, another member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board, emphasizes the Group’s pioneering role in sustainable aviation, “We are pioneers worldwide with simple, easy-to-book, and individual offers for our customers. I am delighted that we are now also offering Green Fares on selected long-haul flights on all hub airlines.”
Since the successful introduction of Green Fares for routes within Europe and North Africa in February, the Lufthansa Group has seen a growing number of customers opting for these eco-friendlier flights. In fact, more than half a million passengers have already chosen Green Fares flights since its launch.
CO2 Compensation and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
The Green Fares package includes full offsetting of individual flight-related CO2 emissions with a combination of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and contributions to high-quality climate protection projects. SAF achieves a reduction of 10 percent of CO2 emissions, while the remaining 90 percent is offset through climate protection projects. The Lufthansa Group ensures that the required amount of SAF is fed into airport infrastructure within six months of purchase. This “drop-in” fuel is mixed with fossil fuel before being transported to the airport, without any need for refueling individual flights with SAF.
From the end of November, travelers can choose Green Fares long-haul fare on routes such as Zurich to Los Angeles, Frankfurt to Miami, Sao Paulo to Zurich, and many more. Participating airlines in this test include Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS.
The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and halve its net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. This commitment includes accelerated fleet modernization, the use of SAF, optimization of flight operations, and sustainable offers for passengers and corporate customers.
