AirAsia is set to expand its network with the introduction of a new route from Kuala Lumpur to Perth, Australia utilizing its A321neo aircraft.. Starting on March 11, 2024, AirAsia will operate daily roundtrip flights between the two cities.
The new service will complement AirAsia X’s) and Thai AirAsia X’s existing services to Australia, offering travelers more options for connecting between Malaysia and the Land Down Under.
“Perth has consistently been one of AirAsia’s most popular destinations,” said AirAsia CEO Riad Asmat. “Based on increasing demand, we believe now is the right time to expand our network into this new market in West Australia. We also anticipate introducing more routes in the region in the near future.”

The flights will be operated using A321neo aircraft, which can accommodate 236 passengers in a single-class configuration. The journey between Kuala Lumpur and Perth will take approximately five hours and forty minutes each way. AirAsia will join Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine) as the only operator of the A321neo type into Perth.
In addition to the new Perth service, AirAsia X will also commence flights to Almaty International (ALA) in Kazakhstan on March 14, 2024. The airline will operate four roundtrips per week between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty, utilizing its A330-300 aircraft. This marks AirAsia X’s first route into Central Asia.
“This is an entirely new market for AirAsia X and a strategic route to expand into,” said AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail. “We expect these flights to foster significant trade, commerce, and education interchange.”
AirAsia currently operates two A321neos, registered as 9M-VAA and 9M-VAB. The airline is scheduled to receive 362 more A321neos starting in 2024.
